Welsh Lovespoons from Welsh Gifts

Here at Welsh Gifts we have a wonderful collection of Welsh lovespoons in all shapes, sizes and materials including wooden lovespoons, pewter lovespoons and mini lovespoons which are great for wedding favours.

Lovespoons are traditionally romantic gifts that were given to ladies by their suitors and were designed to showcase their skills at carving and artistry. This was also a way for the fathers to see that the suitor was capable of caring for his daughter. The Welsh lovespoons are meant to be more decorative items with elaborate and meaningful patterns and symbols incorporated into the design rather than practical spoons.

The symbols on the lovespoons have different meanings associated with them although there is some debate as to the exact meanings of some symbols. The more universal symbols include horseshoes are for luck, hearts for love, bells for a wedding, locks for security, twisted stem for togetherness and the dragon as a symbol of Wales and protection. You can choose the message you send to a loved one by selecting the lovespoon with the symbols of what you want to say. 

Welsh Lovespoons have been crafted since around the seventeenth century and are prized pieces to be displayed normally on the wall of the home. Although welsh lovespoons are the most famous, there are also similar crafted spoons seen in Scandinavia and Eastern parts of Europe.

Nowadays lovespoons are given as wedding favours, Valentines day gifts, birthday presents or Christmas presents and also as souvenirs of Wales.
